The Golden Rules of Watch Collecting

The Golden Rules of Watch Collecting

In a world of fast fashion and digital screens, there is something deeply soulful about a mechanical timepiece. At Powells, we believe a watch is more than just a way to tell time, it’s a piece of history, an engineering marvel, and often, a future heirloom.

To help you navigate the intricate world of horology, we sat down with our resident specialist, Micheala, who brings over 30 years of expertise working with the world’s most prestigious watch brands.

Micheala’s love for horology didn’t happen overnight, it was built through decades of handling the best of the best.

"I’ve always been drawn to the 'Swiss' brands," Micheala states. "Rolex, Cartier, Omega... the history is just incredible. When you see the craftsmanship that goes into these pieces, you can’t help but respect them."

At Powells, our collection focuses on vintage and preowned timepieces. We don’t just source them, we curate. Every watch that enters our collection undergoes a rigorous authentication process. We inspect the movement, refurbish the aesthetic where necessary, and exchange worn straps to ensure that when a watch reaches your wrist, it’s in peak condition.

Sourcing Your "Holy Grail"

While many know us for the treasures in our windows, our sourcing service is our best-kept secret. If you have a specific, rare model in mind,

"If a client has a specific watch in mind, we sit down and we create a profile for our clients" Michaela explains. "We take the time to understand exactly what you're looking for. When a piece emerges that matches your criteria, you’re the first to know."

From "Magic" Clocks to Rare Accidents

Over three decades, Micheala has handled some truly extraordinary pieces. One standout wasn't a wristwatch at all, but an Atmos clock.

"It runs on atmospheric pressure," she recalls. "It requires incredibly specific care. Handling something so delicate, which is often a precious family treasure to the client, It’s a privilege when someone trusts you with a family heirloom like that."

She also remembers a rare encounter with a Rolex Daytona. After a customer bought it new, the dial began to discolour.

"Rolex actually offered to buy it back because the discolouration was so rare it increased the watch's value! The client, knowing they had something unique, decided to keep it. It’s those little quirks of history that make this job so exciting."

Micheala’s Advice for Your First Big Buy
